Asteroid Lily are an exciting, new, synth-pop duo who burst forth into the musical universe this June.

You & I is the first single from their forthcoming album. It’s a nostalgic, bright, fun, energetic, slice of synth-pop. A song about the journey that love can take you on. Dreaming big. Celebrating the highs. Reminiscing what might have been. Lamenting a split... Or is it purely hypothetical?

I met the duo a few months ago, when they were performing a short set at Other Spaces Arts, the hidden gem of a venue in Windsor, UK. A combination of their sound, their look, their vocals, and their enthusiasm immediately piqued my interest.

I took the opportunity to have a brief chat about how they got started. Spiros – a Greek musician, singer, composer, and producer – had been approached by Swedish singer/songwriter Josefine for production duties on another project.  Whilst working together, a clear creative connection was sparked. They decided to cement the collaboration and form a new band together – and Asteroid Lily was born!

Since then, whilst busy crafting a collection of new songs and touring the grassroots live music scene, they have been added to the roster of boutique independent agency/labe, Paper Garden Records.

I have to confess, I wasn’t immediately blown away by You & I on my first spin. But it has absolutely grown on me each time I have listened. The catchy melodies have stuck, and I find myself humming it throughout the day.

As well as the emotional highs and lows of a thrilling relationship, there is also the theme of outer space threaded through the lyrics, a clever tie to the band’s name.

Jo sings wistfully in her confident, distinctive tone:

We were gonna fly so far
Had a plan for every planet and star
But we only got into my car

Characteristic of the genre, there are soaring synth riffs, lush strings, bubbling basslines, and driving drums. Male and female harmonies weave in and complement each other effortlessly.

I would have loved the vocals to go up a level for the finale of the song, and lift it even higher. Instead, the track seems to end rather abruptly.

Nevertheless, it has certainly whet my appetite for the package of future singles, and album, promised later this year. Take me to the moon and back, Asteroid Lily… I can hardly wait!
